Pisciotta: A seaside village which will win your heart

The coast of Pisciotta boasts a mix of sandy beaches where you can hire sun beds and sun umbrellas. Children can safely play because of the shallow water. There are pebble beaches for those who want to relax without feeling the sand on their skin.

The "Bandiera Blu" an award for the cleanest beaches was also given to Pisciotta Marina for the year 2016. The clean waters of Marina are both inviting and regenerating. For the more adventurous, you can take part in organized excursions and discover bays, beaches grottos, secluded waters and experience fishing for tourism.

Another fascinating option, for those who are brave enough, is the opportunity to spend a night at sea witnessing the traditional fishing methods used for fishing for menaica achovies. The net is put out to sea and then brought in by hand. This allows only anchovies of a particular size to be caught. The catch is cleaned on the boat and the anchovies are placed in terracotta bowls, following tradition. This is a renowned and delicious local dish.

Pisciotta also offers culinary attractions. You can buy fresh fish directly from the local fishermen or try traditional dishes in the local restaurants which combine both seafood and other local products.

Pisciotta Marina boasts a quaint touristy port. It also offers boat services and it is a captivating scene for aspiring navigators.

From the little port, you can reach Capo Palinuro by asking one of the local tour operators. Capo Palinuro is one of the most important places of marine interest in Europe. It’s perfect for discovering and exploring caves, grottos and beautiful beaches.

Caprioli another seaside centre within the area of Pisciotta is located between Pisciotta and Palinuro. It boasts the “Torre Di Caprioli”, one of the coastal towers from the Kingdom of Naples. It was built in the 500s as protection against the assault of the Turks. Here another local treasure the Sepulcher of Palinuro is kept. This ancient tomb is located at the entrance of the Velino Port and was erected by the Lucani to make up for killing Palinuro who was Enea’s legendary sailor. He left the coast of Libya and came to this land where he was cannibalized and he gave the name Capo Palinuro. This was the place where the Lucani people erected an altar and where they sacrificed a goat in order to free themselves from the terrible curse which happened after this event. For this reason the name Torre del Capro was given and subsequently Caprioli.
