The treasures of the Cilento

Visting Pisciotta means letting yourself be overwhelmed by its beautiful contrasts: the sea, the mountains, century old olive trees, fishing nets, ancient villages, beautiful fauna. Pisciotta is the perfect place to base yourself if you want to visit other nearby important locations of interest.

15 km away, you reach Palinuro, the pearl of the Cilento, with its beautiful grottos which attract tourists from all over the world. You can book excursions and boat trips or sunbathe on the beautiful beaches and enjoy the clean blue sea. Enjoy the nightlife in the local bars and trendy discos.

22 km from Pisciotta you can reach Marina di Camerota, a little village located at the bottom of Monte Bulgheria. A beautiful clean sea awaits you, secret beaches and the uncontaminated Punta degli infreschi, a wonderful spot that has been completely untouched by man.

30 km from Pisciotta you reach Agropoli, a fishing village in the Pollica area. It boasts picturesque houses built in stone. According to legend, Ernest Hemingway the writer stayed here and it was this town and its people that inspired his masterpiece “The old man and the sea”. From Acciaroli you can also reach another area of Pollica called Pioppi. Here you can visit the Sea Museum and the Museum dedicated to the Mediterranean Diet.

If you’re a fan of archaeological itineraries, then you mustn’t forget to visit the ancient city of Elea Velia, in the area of Ascea (10 km from Pisciotta). Elea was founded by Greek colonies around the 6th century a.c. on a sacred site dedicated to Yele. The city became very famous for its school of Philosophy animated by great thinkers like Zenone and Parmenide. It was a holiday destination from Cicerone and Orazio and it was given the name Velia in Roman times. It was also home to the Medical School of Salerno. In Velia you can find numerous towers which were erected to spy on Saracens and to help defend the area from their invasions. These can be found along the Cilento Coast which runs from the port of Pisciotta to Salerno.

Paestum is another important archaeological site which is not very distant from Pisciotta (approximately 70 km). Recognized by UNESCO for its humanistic heritage since 1988. It is home to three important temples: the Poseidon Temple, The Hero Temple and the Cerere Temple. Here there are numerous artistic and historical works, for example frescoes of the Tomb of the Tuffatore, the only example of painting from the Greek era of Magna Grecian.

50 minutes from Pisciotta, you can reach Sapri, the gem of the Gulf of Policastro, famous for Carlo Pisacane’s expedition in 1857, this event was mentioned in Luigi Mercantini’s poem called 2”La spigolatrice di Sapri", and still remembered today by cultural and touristic initiatives which honor the memory of the landing by 300 brave revolutionaries.
