Pisciotta: love for one's land: folklore and beyond

The hospitality that the people from Pisciotta offer will be one of the things you will love most about this area. Hospitality in the South is always to the forefront and you can witness it at its greatest during the main events which are organized in the community. (especially religious ones).

Amongst the traditional events, the most important is the celebration of "Sant'Agnello Abate". It occurs twice a year. The 14 December which marks the anniversary of the Saint’s death and the 10th August as a summer celebration with music, fireworks and a variety of entertainment.

Another important event is the "Fiera di Mezza Galera". This celebration brings Pisciotta Marina to life on the 25 July and 25 August. The dates are linked to two religious anniversaries. On the 25 July Saint Christopher is celebrated the patron saint of travellers in difficulty. On the 25 August Saint Ludovico the patron saint of the Franciscan Order and in Pisciotta Marina an order of Franciscan monks can be found. The name of this event comes from the “scoglio di mezza galera” which in the 700s was used as a hiding place for the galleys who smuggled salt and wanted to avoid being caught.

The fair is an expression of the Cilento tradition, which among folkloristic events, typical products and culinary delicacies, ends with the Galera award, given to three Cilento citizens who had the merit of making known the culture of this earth in the world.
